You’re deep in a build, and you hit your limit. Again. Five plans on five clocks, and no idea which one has room.

Meet Usage HUD. It tells you which plan has room right now, and when this one runs out.

Your agents can ask it too, before they burn a limit. And it shows what your usage is really worth.

Usage HUD is free for your Mac.

On screen at the end: Nothing leaves your Mac unless you turn on the optional badge.

Five lanes, one verdict
  • Claude
  • Codex
  • Gemini
  • Grok
  • Local Ollama

01 / What it does

One verdict,not twelve bars.

Usage HUD reads every lane and answers in one sentence about the plan you’re on.

Usage HUD panel: WATCH. Claude: running hot. Codex has room, 12% used. Claude weekly lane at 62% with this pace, empty about 4:38 PM; Codex 12%; Gemini 15% with room to burn. Each lane is labeled measured.
  1. Know which plan has room

GO, WATCH or STOP for the plan you’re on. When it runs hot, the panel names the plan with room: Codex has room · 12% used.

  2. See it coming

Each lane shows when it would run out at this pace and when it resets. Tap the bell for a reset reminder.

  3. Trust the number

Every reading says where it came from: official, measured or estimated. An old reading says it’s old.

02 / What it’s worth

What your plan is worth, and what’s using it.

See the API-equivalent value of your usage and which sessions are using the most. This estimate is not your bill.

Usage HUD panel, GO: Claude: clear to build. Claude 38% of the week, Codex 27%, both official. At the bottom, the Value line: This week, $88 API value, not billed; you pay $28 of $120 a month; 3.2 times.

What it takes

  • Your Mac: macOS 14 or later, Apple silicon or Intel.
  • Claude and Codex: Claude Code or Codex signed in. Nothing else to install for those two lanes.
  • Gemini and Grok: those lanes need Node.js 18 or later.
  • Local models: the local lane reads your Ollama logs.

How it installs

  1. Open the disk image and drag Usage HUD to Applications.
  2. Open it and click Set up. It finds the tools you have and takes the first reading.
  3. Updates come to you. When a new version is out, it asks, then installs itself.

Prefer Terminal? Install with one line.

Tip jar

Saved you a cut-off mid-task?

Leave a tip. It doesn’t unlock anything; the app is the same either way. It does keep someone fixing it when a provider changes their numbers.

Stripe handles the payment. Next you’ll see a thank-you page with the download. Tipped by mistake? Email [email protected] within 14 days for a refund.

The Usage HUD disk image window: the new app icon, three glass lanes with a white pace tick, an arrow to the Applications folder, and the words Drag Usage HUD to Applications. Then open it. It lives in your menu bar.
The disk image. One drag and it’s installed.

05 / Questions

Before youdownload.

Will macOS let me open it?
Yes. Usage HUD is signed with a Developer ID and notarized by Apple, so it opens like any other Mac app.
Does my usage leave my Mac?
Not to us. Usage HUD has no account and no server for your data. It asks each provider for your own numbers, the way their own tools do, and keeps the results on your Mac. The only exception is an optional public README badge that you turn on yourself. Details are in the privacy note.
Is there a Windows version?
Not yet. Windows support is planned. This page adds a Windows download only when one is ready.
Can my agents use it?
Yes. The app is also a read-only command line and an MCP server with five tools: usage_status, which_plan_has_room, lane_detail, spend_summary and recent_activity. In Settings › Agents, click Copy prompt and paste it into Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI or Cursor; that agent connects the rest and shows you every change. It needs no keys and sends nothing anywhere. Agent docs.
Is API value what I’m billed?
No. API value is what your tokens would cost at pay-per-use API prices, counted from the session logs on your Mac. Your plan is a flat subscription, so it’s a size comparison, not a bill. What you pay shows beside it: detected for Claude Max and ChatGPT Pro, or set it in Settings › Plans.
How do updates work?
Usage HUD checks for a new version once a day. When one is out, it asks first, then installs itself. You can also pick Check for Updates from its menu.
Is it really free? What does a tip get me?
Yes, free: no license, no trial clock, no account. A tip gets our thanks and nothing else; the app is the same either way.
I paid $9 before. What now?
Thank you. Your download link still works, and the 14-day refund on that purchase still stands: email [email protected].
How is it different from CodexBar?
CodexBar is free, open source and covers far more tools. Usage HUD does one narrower job: one calm verdict that says which plan has room and when this one runs out, with a label on every number. Full comparison.
