Usage HUD Free check

Is ccusage accurate for Claude Max limits?

For tokens, yes. For how much of your Max limit is left, no. It can't be, and it doesn't claim to be.

Our test, same Mac, same minute: /usage said the 5-hour window was 12% used and reset at 1:20 AM. ccusage showed a block ending at 1:00 AM and $82.95 of API-priced tokens, with no percentage at all.

Terminal output of claude-usage-check: official 5-hour 12% used resetting 1:20 AM, weekly 77% used, ccusage-style block ending 20 minutes earlier than the server reset

The short answer

ccusage reads the transcripts Claude Code writes to ~/.claude/projects and adds up the tokens. That count is real. Your Claude Max limit is a different thing: a percentage Anthropic's server tracks across everything you do on the plan. Three facts keep a token count from turning into that percentage.

  1. Anthropic doesn't publish Max limits in tokens. Its help center describes session and weekly limits as percentages you watch in Settings > Usage (Anthropic: usage limit best practices). With no token ceiling, there's nothing to divide by.
  2. Your local logs only see Claude Code on this machine. Anthropic says Pro and Max limits are "shared across Claude and Claude Code" (Anthropic: using Claude Code with Pro or Max). Chats on claude.ai, the desktop app and your other computers count too, and none of them write to your transcripts folder.
  3. Block times are an estimate. ccusage starts a 5-hour block at the hour of your first message (ccusage docs: blocks). The server keeps its own window. In our test they were 20 minutes apart.

ccusage itself is careful about this. Its guide calls its numbers "estimated costs based on token usage and model pricing" (ccusage guide).

What we measured

Both tools ran on the same Mac between 9:35 and 9:36 PM PDT on 2026-09-27.

ccusage blocks --active output: block started 2026-09-28 03:00:00 UTC, 3h 24m remaining, total cost $82.95
ccusage 20.0.26 in the same minute. The block started at 03:00 UTC; the server's window started at 03:20 UTC.

What ccusage is good for

A lot. It's free, MIT-licensed, has 18.8k GitHub stars, and reads logs from about 18 coding tools. Use it to see which projects, models and days burn the most tokens, or what the same work would cost on the API. Just don't use its dollars or block times as your Max limit. For that, use /usage, the statusline's rate_limits, or a tool that reads them. See Usage HUD vs ccusage for a side-by-side.

Method: check it yourself

  1. Machine: MacBook with Apple M5 Max, macOS 26.5.2, Node.js 26.7.0. Claude Code 2.1.283 on a Claude Max plan; Codex CLI 0.157.1 on ChatGPT Pro.
  2. Official reading: the rate_limits.five_hour and rate_limits.seven_day fields Claude Code passes to statusline scripts (Claude Code statusline docs). They match /usage.
  3. Estimate: npx [email protected] blocks --active and --json, run in the same minute.
  4. Free check: npx github:Thalia-Bloom/claude-usage-check. It prints both numbers and the gap between the window times. Source: github.com/Thalia-Bloom/claude-usage-check.
npx github:Thalia-Bloom/claude-usage-check
npx ccusage@latest blocks --active
# in Claude Code:
/usage

Your numbers will differ. What should match is the pattern: the official number is a percentage with a server reset time; the estimate is tokens with a guessed block.

Questions

Is ccusage accurate for Claude Max limits?

It is accurate about tokens logged by Claude Code on your machine. It is not a measure of your Claude Max limit: Anthropic does not publish plan limits in tokens, ccusage cannot see claude.ai or your other computers, and its 5-hour blocks start at the hour of your first message rather than at the server's window. Use /usage in Claude Code or Settings > Usage on claude.ai for the limit.

Which Claude usage number is authoritative?

The percentage Anthropic's server reports. You see it in /usage, in Settings > Usage on claude.ai, and in the rate_limits field that Claude Code passes to statusline scripts.

Why does ccusage show dollars on a Max plan?

ccusage multiplies tokens by API prices to estimate what the same work would cost on the API. On a Max plan you pay a flat fee, so that dollar figure is a size comparison, not a bill and not a limit.

Can I check this myself for free?

Yes. Run npx github:Thalia-Bloom/claude-usage-check. It reads your local files, prints the official reading if one is saved, the token estimate, and how far apart the two window times are. It sends nothing.

What Usage HUD is

A Mac menu-bar app that shows how much of each Claude, Codex, Gemini, Grok and Ollama window you've used, when it resets, and a label on every number: official, measured, estimated or unknown, with a one-line reason. The Claude number comes from the same endpoint /usage reads. The app never refreshes or changes your login token. Codex numbers come from the rate_limits events in your local session logs.

Which number is right

Each bar says where it came from and how old it is, so a stale or estimated number doesn't pass as official.

Pace, not just percent

It compares how much you've used with how much of the window has passed.

Stays on your Mac

No Usage HUD account and no analytics in the app. A public README badge is opt-in.

What it costs

Mac app

Free

Tip jar: $5, $9 or $19, optional. Signed and notarized by Apple.

  • Your Mac: macOS 14 or later, Apple silicon or Intel.
  • Claude and Codex: Claude Code or Codex signed in. Nothing else to install for those two lanes.
  • Gemini and Grok: those lanes need Node.js 18 or later.
  • Local models: the local lane reads your Ollama logs.

claude-usage-check is a free, MIT-licensed command. It runs once in your terminal, reads the same local files, and prints which number is official and when each window resets. It doesn't upload anything.
