When does the Claude Code usage limit reset?

There are two windows. The 5-hour window resets at the timestamp the usage endpoint reports for it, a few hours out. The weekly window resets at its own timestamp, days out. Usage HUD shows both reset times in the Mac menu bar.

How do I know which window I hit?

Compare the two percentages. A full 5-hour bar with room left on the weekly bar means a short wait. A full weekly bar means the short reset will not help.

Can Usage HUD raise my limit?

No. It shows the official percentages and reset times so you can plan around them.

Claude Code usage limit

Usage limit reached. Which window, and when does it reset?

Claude Code stops with a usage-limit message and does not say much else. Under a Pro or Max plan there are two windows behind that message: a rolling 5-hour window and a weekly window. They fill at different rates and reset on different clocks, and the message looks the same for both. The first job is to know which one you hit and when it comes back.

Usage HUD is a $9 Mac menu-bar meter that reads the usage endpoint Claude Code’s own /usage panel reads. The two windows

The 5-hour window

This is the short window. The usage endpoint reports it as a percentage used plus a reset timestamp. Usage HUD labels it 5-hour limit and shows the reset time the endpoint returns; it does not guess the time from your own clock. When the reset time passes, the reading expires instead of sitting at an old value.

The weekly window

The endpoint also reports a weekly all-models limit with its own percentage and reset timestamp. Usage HUD labels it Weekly · all models. On plans where the endpoint also returns a model-scoped weekly limit, the HUD shows that as its own line, for example Fable weekly. A full weekly window is the one that hurts, because the reset is days away, not hours.

Which one did you hit?

Look at both percentages. If the 5-hour bar is full and the weekly bar is not, wait for the short reset. If the weekly bar is full, the short reset will not help. If neither is full and Claude Code still refused, the reading is old; check the freshness stamp before drawing a conclusion.

How to see it coming

The menu bar shows one bar per provider. Click it and the panel lists each Claude window with its percentage, the reset time, when the reading was captured, and a confidence label. For Claude the label is official, with the note that the number was fetched from the usage endpoint Claude Code’s /usage panel reads.

The reading refreshes while you work. The fetch runs from a Claude Code status-line hook and from a background writer, so you do not have to type /usage to update it. When the endpoint asks the app to back off, the app keeps the last reading and shows its age rather than inventing a new one.

The HUD reads the login token Claude Code keeps in the macOS Keychain. It never refreshes or rewrites that token. If the token has expired because you have not opened Claude Code in a while, the panel says unauthorized and tells you to open a Claude Code session once.

What the meter cannot tell you

It cannot explain why a percentage moved. Claude Desktop, the web app, and Claude Code share the same plan windows, and the endpoint reports the plan total, not a per-client breakdown. It cannot show the tokens or messages behind the percentage. It shows what the endpoint reports, with a label that says how much to trust it, and nothing more.
